Kobe Bryant is the most iconic Los Angeles Lakers player and one of the greatest NBA players of all time. His unique name, unprecedented talent, and mentality set him apart from the other players in the league.
But his name came thanks to his father, Joe Bryant, who named his son after the expensive and known Japanese cut of beef, "Kobee Beef," after seeing it on a menu.
When he became known and his brand name blew up, Bryant sued the Japanese city of Kobe in 2010 for the right to rename their signature product. While the city of Kobe had been around longer than him, he decided to sue it because he had become more famous and influential, and his brand could easily be threatened.
Kobe Bryant was a fantastic player, and no one doubled guess him, so when he made up the Black Mamba nickname for himself, it stuck around and became famous for the Lakers legend to be referenced by it. Only Kobe was able to do something like that.
