A lot has been said about the Lakers looking to add another backup center to the 14th spot roster, with two main names being the closest to be signed by GM Rob Pelinka, until now.

Christian Wood and Bismack Biyombo remain the two top options for LA, as Pelinka and Ham have been waiting for Wood to decide whether he wants to sign with the purple and gold or not.

But now not only Wood has competition for the Lakers roster spot with Biyombo, now has three other contenders. Tristan Thompson remains an affordable option for LA, but now that the Suns have waived Usman Garuba and the Mavs are set to waive JaVale McGee, the competition just got more interesting.

At the moment those are the top 5 options for the Lakers, Christian Wood, Bismack Biyombo, Usman Garuba, JaVale McGee, and Tristan Thompson. Out of them, the two most interesting choices are Wood and Garuba.

The reason why the Lakers should not bring back McGee

Unlike what McGee was able to do in 2020, the former Lakers big isn't in the same shape anymore, and there's a big red flag, as he didn't have much playing time with Dallas, which should be considered for coach Ham if the organization is looking to sign him.
