Earvin ‘Magic’ Johnson is one of the best players in NBA history. Some people debate that he is the best player in Lakers history and he certainly has the qualifications to be so. That's why his sudden retirement shook the whole NBA. Then he explained the reason was that he had contracted HIV.

On November 7, 1991, Magic Johnson announced his abrupt retirement after he tested positive for HIV. The relationship he had with the Lakers owner, Jerry Buss was one of father and son. That is why according to a former Lakers player, Kurt Rambis, Buss had an intense reaction to the news

Magic Johnson would eventually come back to play with the Lakers on two occasions. the first one being in 1996, and then coming back once again for a final time from 1999 to 2000. However, by then he wasn't the same dominant player he was through the eighties. 

Magic Johnson's career

Magic Johnson played 13 seasons all of them for the Lakers. During that time he averaged 19.5 points, 11.2 assists, and 7.2 rebounds. He was selected to play in 11 All-Star games. He won 3 MVP awards, 3 Finals MVP awards, and 5 NBA championships. He was then inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2002.
