The Lakers aren't a team that is known to make a lot of big free agency signings. Some of their best players have come from draft selections, such as Magic Johnson and Kobe Bryant, or via trade, like Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. However, sometimes the team have to use free agency to make some splashes in the league. Now, as the team is trying to improve the roster by making some signings before the start of the season, it's a good time to remember the best signing the team has ever made.

There's only one choice, the signing of Shaquille O'Neal. This signing is not only the greatest in Lakers history but one of the biggest free-agent pickups of all time. Shaq ended up being selected seven times to the All-Star, was league MVP, three-time champion and three-time Final MVP and a scoring champion. All of this in only seven years with the team. No doubt his signing -and Kobe's draft selection- created a dynasty for the team.

Finally! LeBron James will be a Lakers player for two more years!

O’Neal was already a top player in the league when he signed with the Lakers. He was selected to the All-star game in all of his four years with the Orlando Magic. He also won his first scoring title and managed to reach the NBA finals in 1994. They lost, but Shaq showed he could lead a team to a championship. The Lakers would end up giving Shaq a seven-year, $121 million contract, six million more than the Magic wanted to offer.

Of course, Shaq would end up leaving the team after the 2004 season, to join the Miami Heat and win his last title. Still, he is known as one of the greatest Lakers ever, right with Magic and Kareem. The team would end up retiring his jersey as proof of the importance of Shaq to the team and the NBA. Now there's no player like Shaq in free agency, but the team must make some moves so that they can compete for another ring or two.

What is the best move the Lakers have ever made?

Shaq's free agent signing has to be one of the best decisions the Lakers front office has ever made. Still, the trade for Kareem Abdul-Jabbar was another move that must be talked about, as he helped the team to win multiple championships, and, of course, he ended up holding the scoring record for decades. LeBron singing could end up surpassing Shaq's, but for now, he has been just a really good signing.
