The Los Angeles Lakers still need to add some pieces that can make them a competitive team. They just traded for Patrick Beverley, who will definitely improve their defense. But there are some positions that they need to address before the start of training camp. Some reports are linking Carmelo Anthony back with the Lakers as he was a great role player last season. But as days go by, it seems that's not going to happen.

Carmelo Anthony had a nice season last year despite the team missing out on the playoffs. The Lakers didn't sign Melo to be the centerpiece of the team, but at some points, he ended up being it, as LeBron James and Anthony Davis were out with injuries and Russell Westbrook was a shell of himself. Still, the all-star player ended up the season with an average of 13.3 points, 4.2 rebounds and 1.0 assists.

Jeanie Buss would never consider doing this with the Lakers

NBA insider Jovan Buha explained why the Lakers are not trying to sing Melo once again. The Lakers still need to add some pieces to the offense, especially good shooters, something Melos excels at. However, Buha believes there are other priorities for the team than to sign a veteran player like Anthony.

“I haven’t heard much on the Melo front. It could be possible. I think, looking at the roster, they need more frontcourt depth now that Stanley Johnson is gone. They have a couple of roster openings. They need shooting, and that’s something Melo is still an elite player at. I do think defense remains a concern for this team. They’re light on perimeter and wing defense. That’s not Melo’s strong suit,” he explained in a HoopsHype podcast.

As said above, Carmelo Anthony had a nice season as a role player. He led the team in defensive rating with 114, but the team still ended in the bottom ten in defensive efficiency. The most important side for Melo was that he played in 69 games, which is way more than LeBron James and Anthony Davis.
